A Beginning: Again, for the First Time
For reasons that will likely be revealed in later posts because I over-share, I have decided to try my best to follow yet another dietary discipline in the effort to achieve better health. My reasons are practical and maybe even a little selfish. I'm ok with that.
I'm not a doctor, nor a nutritionist, nor even a little qualified to advise anyone on their dietary choices. EVER. That said, I have a good working (read: practical knowledge from the School of Hard Knocks) knowledge about how foods react to my own personal body.
I have tried a standard 1970s Mid-Western diet (canned soup, sandwiches, HOT DISH, pizza, and root beer float weekends), "Just Eat Less, Move More - it's Simple Math" (yeah, right), Jenny Craig (not enough food, and SO bland), Weight Watchers (pre-points, and I was probably too young to do this one), eating 7 times a day with lots of cardio (thank you 90s personal trainer - gained a lot of great muscle), Atkins (lush, loved the food, ate SO much of it), F-it - I'll eat what I want, Paleo, Keto, SUPER STRICT KETO, Intermittent Fasting... I have learned a lot.
A lot of what I have learned is what hasn't worked - obviously or I would have settled one of those modes of eating. Yeah, I guess it was about weight loss, and maybe it still is, but the thing is? I do eat pretty well, and I don't eat a huge volume so my body should be working well and not holding on to extra fat, right? So, SOMETHING must be wrong with my intake or my output.
I am a baker by trade and thus am used to heavy lifting and a fairly active workday, I enjoy a ballet class a few times a week, and my dog enjoys walking with me (though admittedly she's quite senior and a few blocks are enough for her joints, and my knee.)
So, to the end of trying something new, and trying to figure out how to cook in a new way (yet again) I thought I would build a blog for my recipes to maybe help others make a decent meal out of the odd options that are beneficial, super beneficial, and neutral to our type and avoiding the avoids. The principles outlined in the diet I'm following can be found in the GenoType Diet book By Dr. Peter D'Adamo. MY GenoType is The Warrior. I've also done some genetic testing, the results of which seem to align to the recommendations that Dr. D'Adamo lays out for my blood type/genetic markers/secretor status. Welp, this sounds good to me and as you can see from my long list of dietary lineage, I'm game to try new things.
So.. here we go!
